Undertones from the April 2008 issue

DAVID OCCHIPINTI
Forty Revolutions (Occdav)

David Occhipinti’s multifaceted compositions tend to follow convoluted paths, each forming an intriguing pastiche of interlinked episodes. Studious contemplation gives way to enigmatic abstraction, spare simplicity or quickening excitement, with Occhipinti’s ringing guitar tone and quirky harmonic sense pointing the way for his tightly knit quartet. Saxophonist Mike Murley sounds relaxed and unflappable through even the greatest dynamic changes, while bassist Andrew Downing and drummer Terry Clarke phase in and out, moving smoothly from spare backgrounds to forceful proclamations.
